What are the most common skin conditions?

Below are the most common skin conditions and how our experts can help with the treatment

Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that begins with blackheads and erupts into whiteheads or pimples. It typically affects teenagers during puberty but can affect individuals of all ages.

Acne occurs when sebaceous glands on the face, neck and back produce excess oil in response to hormonal changes, which clog pores and form breakouts; bacteria then infect this oil to produce inflammatory acne.

Acne affects people of all ages and can be unsightly; it is not only a cosmetic problem but can, in severe cases, cause permanent scarring. However, it is also generally easy to treat with the help of cosmetic professionals such as those at Skinthetics Cosmetic Clinic.

Acne can be successfully treated using medications, suitable cosmetic products, LED lights, laser treatments and medical peels and facials such as microdermabrasion.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes flushing and blushing of the face. It can affect people from all walks of life regardless of age, sex or race. People with Rosacea usually have facial redness but may also experience a burning sensation and dry skin.

Medical treatment is available for Rosacea that includes topical or oral medications and light therapies.

Boils

Boils (also called furuncles) are a deep form of bacterial infection of a hair follicle. They present as one or more tender red spots, lumps or pustules. Careful inspection reveals that the boil is centered on a hair follicle.

Boils are usually treated by lancing and oral  antibiotics.

Carbuncle

If there are multiple heads, the lesion is called a carbuncle. Large boils form abscesses, which involve an accumulation of pus. Cellulitis (ie, infection of the surrounding tissues) may also occur, and this may cause fever and illness.

A carbuncle is usually treated through antibiotics, pain relievers and antibacterial soaps. If the carbuncle is persistent, it can be removed using surgery.

Hives

Hives are superficial skin-coloured or pale skin swellings, usually surrounded by redness that lasts anywhere from a few minutes to 24 hours. Usually very itchy they may have a burning sensation. This condition is often caused by allergies or stress. Treatments are available for this condition that include antihistamines and topical products.

Folliculitis

Folliculitis is a skin condition in which there are inflamed hair follicles. The result is a tender red spot, often with a surface pustule. It can be due to infection, occlusion, irritation and various skin diseases.

Folliculitis may be superficial or deep and can affect anywhere there are hairs, including chest, back, buttocks, arms, and legs. Treatment consists of various creams to fight off or control infection and reduce inflammation. It can also be treated through minor surgery and laser hair removal.

Cellulitis

Cellulitis is an infection of the deep layers of skin and subcutaneous tissue. Cellulitis is a serious infection and should be treated immediately. It is characterized by painful, swollen, red skin that is tender and warm to the touch. It spreads rapidly and is caused by fungi or bacteria which enter the body through cuts or cracks in the skin.

Cellulitis is usually treated with prescribed antibiotics. If you’re experiencing chills, fever, or a red streaking from the rash then you could have a serious infection and need urgent medical attention.

Actinic Keratosis

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a rough, scaly patch on the skin that has been caused by overexposure to sunlight. Actinic keratosis usually appears in areas most exposed to the sun and can be characterized by a scaly or crusty patch of skin. It is considered precancerous and is a reflection of abnormal skin cell development due to DNA damage by short-wavelength UVB. Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis  is a type of chronic, recurring skin rash that may appear as scaly red patches on the face, legs and arms. The itching and scratching associated with this condition can cause open sores that become infected.
