Psoriasis

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease characterized by patches of abnormal scaly skin. These patches are typically red, dry and itchy. Most people find them irritating and they can be a cosmetic concern.

Patches usually appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, or nails and are more apparent during winters when heat and humidity increase (imagine flaky dandruff). It mainly occurs due to malfunctioning of the immune system, which causes rapid production of skin cells leading to an irregular build-up of dead skin cells in these areas where they pile up, forming the thick patches/scales.

What exactly are the symptoms?

  • Red patches or patches of thick, silvery scales on the skin.
  • Patches occur more frequently in winter when heat and humidity increase. These areas become really itchy due to constant scratching and rubbing, causing inflammation along with small pus-filled bumps.
  • Though psoriasis does not lead to any pain, sometimes there might be some discomfort in certain areas while moving, walking, or sitting for long periods as the patch may get inflamed due to friction.

What are the treatments for Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is not currently curable, but the following treatments available in our clinic help to manage the condition:

  • Topical creams
These include tar, steroids, vitamin D3 ointments, and anthralin. These creams can help by forming a barrier over the affected area of skin, which helps slow down cell turnover (the normal process where old cells are replaced with new ones). Also, they can reduce scaling and topical steroid creams help reduce redness and itching.
  • LED Light therapy
This treatment uses controlled doses of red or infrared light and is usually only used for plaque psoriasis affecting the scalp, ears, or lower forehead. Light therapy may be prescribed either by itself or in combination with other treatments.
  • Treatment with prescription medications.
Psoriasis can be treated with a range of prescription medications and newer injections
